What the Ticket Includes

The ride up the track is about 8 minutes over roughly 1.6 km, from a lower terminal at 1,583 m to an upper terminal at 2,281 m. The ticket includes the summit building and the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak, a casual 2 km stroll made of 368 shallow stairs each way to the Cosmic Ray Station. Ages 5 and under ride free anytime, and the first two hours of the day run a Family Experience with one free child per paying adult.

Booking Rules

Tickets are timed entry and non-refundable, including Pursuit Passes. Advance booking is not required but the operator strongly recommends it, because tickets often sell out during peak times and walk-in availability is not guaranteed. Prices can change at any time, so the figure you see when you book is the figure you pay.

Getting There on the Ticket

Your gondola admission includes free transport. A free shuttle runs May 15 to October 12, 2026 with a same-day pre-purchased ticket, and Roam Transit Route 1 fare is included too. If you drive, on-site parking is $12.42 (C$17.50) and very limited.

Cruise Types and Length

The Classic, Premium and Junior Explorer cruises are each about 1 hour including the safety briefing and loading. The Beer Voyage runs about 1.5 hours, daily at 5 pm from May 22 to September 27. The Premium Cruise is new for 2026 and listed only to September 27.

The 2026 season runs May 8 to October 12, weather dependent.

Rules That Catch People Out

You must arrive at the ticket office no later than 15 minutes before your departure. Tickets are non-refundable, including Pursuit Passes. Ages 5 and under ride free anytime.

Alberta residents save up to 35 percent on the Classic Cruise.

Getting to the Dock

The dock is a 20-minute drive from the town of Banff, the operator's own wording, up the Minnewanka Loop Drive. The ticket office is on the boarding docks, about a 10-minute stroll from the parking lots. Parking is extremely limited and controlled by Parks Canada.

Roam Transit Route 6 runs May 13 to October 4, 2026 and is complimentary for cruise ticket holders, as is the operator shuttle from June 13 to September 7.

The cheapest way to the dock is to let the ticket pay for the bus. Our pick is the Classic Cruise on a morning departure, booked at least a day ahead in July and August by our estimate.

What the Park Pass Costs

Daily admission is $8.69 (C$12.25) per adult, $7.63 (C$10.75) per senior, free for youth 17 and under, and $17.39 (C$24.50) for a family or group of up to seven people arriving in one vehicle. The pass is valid until 4 pm on the day after purchase, so an afternoon arrival covers the next morning. It covers Banff plus several other parks, including Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho and Waterton Lakes.

When the Annual Pass Wins

The Discovery Pass costs $59.30 (C$83.50) per adult or $118.90 (C$167.50) per family for a year. By our sum, an adult breaks even at about seven park days, so a week-long trip with a side trip to another park is already close. Fees fund trails, day-use areas, public safety and education, and stay in the park where they are collected.

Where Attraction Tickets Fit

Attraction tickets buy a specific product: a gondola ride, a boat seat, a chairlift, a hot spring soak. They never waive the park entry fee. The Moraine Lake shuttle is the exception to watch, because its ticket explicitly does not include park entry, so you pay the $9.05 (C$12.75) shuttle and your pass separately.

If you arrive without a pass, buy one at the park gates, the Banff Visitor Centre on Banff Avenue, or online before you go.

Free Attractions and Viewpoints

Johnston Canyon has no gate and no fee. Lower Falls is 1.1 km one way, Upper Falls is 2.4 km one way, and the trailhead is 25 km from Banff on the Bow Valley Parkway. Parking fills quickly, so arrive early or take Roam Route 9.

Vermilion Lakes, Bow Falls, Surprise Corner, Two Jack Lake and the Tunnel Mountain summit trail are all free beyond park entry, though town parking applies downtown.

Cheap Tickets Worth Having

The Banff Park Museum at $3.55 (C$5) is the oldest surviving federal building in any Canadian national park, built in 1903. Cave and Basin at $7.10 (C$10) marks the hot springs discovery that led to the park's creation in 1885. The Whyte Museum at $10.65 (C$15) rounds out a rainy-day trio within walking distance of Banff Avenue.

Free Is Not the Same as Unregulated

Wildlife rules apply everywhere, ticketed or not. Keep 30 metres from elk and deer and 100 metres from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes. Feeding or disturbing wildlife is illegal, with fines up to $17.74 (C$25),000.

Carry bear spray year-round on any trail.
