When Reservations Open

Shuttle reservations open each spring on reservation.pc.gc.ca. For the 2026 season the launch was April 15 at 8 am MDT. On launch day 40 percent of the season's seats were released. The remaining 60 percent are released at 8 am MDT two days before each departure, so last-minute seats do appear if you check back.

How the Booking Works

A reservation is required for all Parks Canada shuttles. Seats are sold in one-hour blocks and you can book up to 10 seats per reservation. The reservation fee is $2.48 (C$3.50) online or $3.90 (C$5.50) by phone at 1-877-737-3783, and it is non-refundable.

You can change or cancel up to one hour before your reservation window for the same fee. Your ticket covers the shuttle to Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, the Lake Connector and the return to the Park and Ride. It does not include park entry, so budget for a day pass from our park pass page.

What Sells Out First

Dawn slots and summer weekend mornings go first, because the parking picture at Lake Louise is brutal. Parks Canada reports that roughly 75 percent of vehicles seeking upper Lake Louise parking were turned away last summer, and lots fill before sunrise. Our estimate based on the release pattern: midsummer dates need a three-day book-ahead at minimum, and launch-day booking is the safe play for July and August.

Season and Hours

The 2026 Moraine Lake shuttle season ran June 1 to October 12, weather permitting. Shuttles departed every 30 minutes between 6:30 am and 5 pm, with the last return at 7:30 pm. The Lake Louise lakeshore shuttle ran from May 15 to October 12, and the Lake Connector between the two lakes ran June 1 to October 12 from 7 am to 6 pm.

How It Works

Alpine Start shuttles depart daily at 4 am and 5 am from the Lake Louise lakeshore lot during the season, June 1 to October 12 in 2026. Riders return at 6 pm via the Lake Connector, so this is a full-day commitment, not a quick dawn dash. The same $9.05 (C$12.75) adult fare plus the $2.48 (C$3.50) reservation fee applies.

The Parking Catch

The Alpine Start departs the Lake Louise lakeshore lot, not the Park and Ride, and it requires paid parking with proof before boarding. Parks Canada does not print the lakeshore parking dollar amount on its visit pages, so check the fee link before you go. The lakeshore lot fills before sunrise in summer, which is why Alpine Start riders arrive very early even for a 4 am bus.

Who Should Take It

One Ticket, Two Lakes

The single ticket price covers Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, the Lake Connector and the return to the Park and Ride. The connector runs 7 am to 6 pm in season, with the last return from Moraine Lake at 6 pm. A sensible pattern from our estimate: shuttle to Moraine Lake in your reserved morning hour, walk the Rockpile, then ride the connector to Lake Louise for the lakeshore or the teahouse trail.

Getting to the Park and Ride

The Park and Ride is at the Lake Louise Ski Resort, 1 Whitehorn Road, with free parking and vehicle access from 6 am to 8 pm. From the Town of Banff, Roam Transit route 8X runs year-round daily, with an adult fare of $8.87 (C$12.50) each way, so a car-free day from Banff costs the 8X fare plus the shuttle fare. Check-in at the kiosk is required.

Note the rule that ticket holders who park at the Lake Louise lakeshore lot will not be permitted on the shuttle.

The No-Driving Alternative

If the whole chain of connections sounds like work, a commercial shuttle handles it in one booking. The Rule

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Parks Canada shuttles and licensed commercial operators with a Moraine Lake Road Licence of Occupation are permitted from June to mid-October. There are only two exceptions: visitors with valid government-issued accessible parking placards and registered guests of Moraine Lake Lodge.

Turning Up Without a Plan

Driving to the gate and hoping is not a strategy. Personal vehicles are turned around, and in summer the upper Lake Louise lots are typically full by dawn, so there is no nearby fallback parking. The workable last-minute moves are a same-day commercial seat, subject to availability, or watching for the 60 percent of Parks Canada seats that release two days before each departure.

Winter

There is no winter workaround. In winter the road is track-set for skiing and the lake itself is inaccessible due to avalanche hazard. No shuttle runs, and the frozen lake is closed to travel.
